Update: Quillayute Valley School District Superintendent and school board members violate Forks High School Athletic Code by allowing a student convicted of felony animal cruelty to play high school baseball
In follow up to last week's action alert on this story, one school board member, Paul Headley, voted against reinstating the student's athletic eligibility. Those of you who wrote a letter on this issue most likely received an unfriendly response from him, and we're sorry about that. The school board's statement on this issue did not include individual board members' votes. PAWS has thanked Mr. Headley for voting to uphold the Forks Athletic Code.
WSU Vet School Finds New Source of Shelter Animals to use in Medical Practice Sessions
Washington State University (WSU) recently lost its supply of live animals when Spokane County Animal Control and Shelter stopped sending former companion animals to WSU’s veterinary school. The School’s veterinary students had been practicing medical procedures, some of them painful and/or invasive, on companion animals obtained from the shelter. Beginning April 1, 2003, Tri-City Animal Control in Pasco, WA, will serve as WSU’s new source for “practice” animals by sending the school up to 100 of its homeless dogs and cats each year.
Please urge city officials to humanely euthanize unwanted animals if no permanent home can be found for them. Remind them that most homeless dogs and cats were once loyal and trusting pets, and should not be used in practice sessions that cause them distress, physical pain, and emotional suffering.

Tri-City Animal Control has the following mission statement: “To improve the quality and care of stray, abused, and abandoned animals, while promoting justice and equality in the enforcement of animal control laws.” Please write to the Director of Tri-City Animal Control, and politely ask him to reconsider the practice of sending companion animals to WSU’s veterinary school, which is not in keeping with his agency’s mission statement.
