Ask Mayor Nickels to Stop Killing Seattle’s Geese
We are possibly less than 2 weeks away from what we expect will be another round up of our beautiful Canada geese in Seattle’s parks. As you probably know by now, USDA Wildlife Services agents are hired to fit “gas chambers” onto the backs of trucks, lure the geese with bread during their molting period when they are unable to fly and then load them into these chambers to be gassed to death. This is the city’s answer to the overpopulation of a species that thrives in our parks because of the way humans have set them up! And all this costs thousands of dollars while the city continues to cut the Parks Department budget, as well as cutting social service and other important areas of funding. There are humane, effective, and much less expensive alternatives! Why won’t Mayor Nickels give them a try?
Please contact Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels at: www.cityofseattle.net/mayor/citizen_response.htm
Ask that Mayor Nickels immediately HALT the killing of geese and instead utilize the skill and knowledge of trained volunteers that have offered humane, effective and less expensive alternatives! You can cut and paste this message into the comment box! You can also call the Mayor’s office at 206-684-4000
Please contact Seattle Parks Superintendent Ken Bounds at:
ken.bounds@ci.seattle.wa.us or 206-684-8022 with the same message!
We will be holding a press event and public outreach effort on this issue on Tuesday, June 3rd – location still to be determined. It will likely be downtown at noon. If you are interested in being part of this event, we need volunteers to hand out information. Please email Jennifer Hillman at jenniferh@paws.org and we’ll keep you updated on what’s happening. If you are interested in getting involved with volunteering to help stop this year’s goose kill, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to help with other various things! If you can help, please email Denise at denise@paws.org Thanks!
USDA proposed rule could help animals in licensed facilities: Please submit your comments TODAY!
The USDA has proposed a rule that would amend the Animal Welfare Act to require more accountability from USDA licensed testing facilities, dealers and exhibitors. Specifically, the rule would require these facilities to keep individual medical records for the animals in their care (they’re already required to have a program of veterinary care). If adopted, this rule would create more standards with which USDA licensed facilities must comply, thereby making it more difficult to carry out work as usual. Strengthening existing regulations would impede business for commercial breeders and backyard breeders who require USDA licenses.
Please submit your comments supporting this proposed rule on or before June 10, 2003. Comments may be submitted by e-mail (no attachments please) to: regulations@aphis.usda.gov (in the subject line, write “Docket No. 97-033-1”).
Letters may be sent to:
