WDFW advising citizens to drown “nuisance” wildlife
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) have been advising citizens to trap and drown wild animals in our state. Last month, residents of a mobile home park in Spokane were having difficulty co-existing with squirrels and skunks and after asking WDFW for assistance and guidance, they were instructed to trap and drown the animals. A report on euthanasia conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) concluded that drowning was not a humane form of euthanasia and although WDFW adopted the AVMA policy two years ago, some agents are still advising citizens to drown wild animals.

Whales and other marine mammals get a reprieve from harmful sonar testing
After years of environmental and animal activists trying to halt the U.S. Navy’s plan to use a sonar system that would have blasted hundreds of thousands of square miles of ocean habitat with noise so intense that it could have maimed, deafened and even killed whales, sea turtles and other marine mammals, a federal court judge earlier this month ruled that the Navy will be barred from deploying this system. The judge in this case stated that the sonar’s noise could “irreparably harm” the marine environment and species and has ordered the Navy to begin working with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on a plan to safely test the system in a limited area. Thanks to all who have written, emailed and called on this important issue!
