A Great Ape's Great Escape: Ivan the Gorilla Celebrates Ten Years Free of Bars!
PAWS celebrates the ten- year anniversary of the campaign to release endangered western lowland gorilla from 27 years of solitary confinement.

Ivan, a magnificent silverback lowland gorilla, spent twenty-seven years alone and imprisoned in a display window at a now defunct Tacoma discount shopping mall. Thanks to seven years of PAWS' efforts in protesting, getting petitions signed, undertaking public education and finally, through lawsuites, in 1994 Ivan began a new life at Zoo Atlanta along with seventeen other gorillas. He is now doing very well-charging, vocalizing, displaying and mating, just like the proud silverback he is.

Ivan's case is a shining example of the amazing change a caring community can inspire. We all owe a debt of gratitude to our community, the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (GSSP), Allison Argo, the Woodland Park Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, and the incredible PAWS advocates who fought for Ivan for so long.

PAWS will be sending Ivan a special "Anniversary Surprise" package in early November. Those who would like to include a card or note for Ivan, or make a gift to PAWS to support our ongoing work are encouraged to do so! To make a gift to PAWS click here. Send cards and notes to:

Neglected Dogs in Popular Washington Vacation Town Need Your Help!
Tell the Grays County Sheriff's Office they must enforce Washington State animal cruelty laws.

On October 12th, PAWS received a call from citizens in Moclips, Washington via the PAWS animal cruelty report line. The report concerned 12 border collies kept in a small outdoor enclosure: unprotected from the elements, living in garbage and their own filth, without the shelter, space, ventilation, or sanitation that Washington State animal cruelty laws require.

Because Moclips is a small coastal town, the Grays County Sheriff is tasked with handling animal related crimes in the area. A PAWS representative has contacted the sheriff and deputies numerous times requesting immediate action and enforcement of state anti-cruelty laws. The Grays County Sheriff and deputies maintain only part of the anti-cruelty law needs to be enforced (that the animals have food); and refuse to take action to remove the animals from their cold, damp and disease- prone environment The Grays County Sheriff's Office does not seem concerned with the welfare of these dogs; please remind them that voters are!

Remind the Sheriff that contained in his own mission statement is:

"We must never forget that we are here to serve the public and are accountable- to our citizens for our actions and for the quality of the services we provide."

Your letters, emails and phone calls are needed to encourage the Sheriff to do the job he was elected to do and enforce the state anti-cruelty laws by properly investigating this case.

Please contact Sheriff Michael J. Whelan and Undersheriff Rick Scott:

If you live in Gray's County, please contact The Daily World of Grays Harbor and Northern Pacific Counties. Let the editor know that your elected officials are not enforcing state animal cruelty laws.
