Ban Cruel Glue Traps
On December 11, 2004 the Ballard Fred Meyer hired Sprague Pest Control to exterminate a number of birds that over the years, had easily found their way into the massive building. Despite availability of nationwide best-practice standards for non-lethal removal, Fred Meyer allowed Sprague Pest Control to catch the birds with glue traps. Animals caught in glue traps struggle painfully for hours and die from hunger, thirst, suffocation and even the shock of breaking their own bones as they try in vain to escape. Luckily, animal welfare activists were present in the store that day and caught the gruesome sight on camera and the story was reported by KOMO news. Obviously, this method of 'pest' control is not an acceptable form of humane wildlife management. Whether these traps are used on birds, rats, mice, snakes, or the non-target animals they frequently ensnare, there is no humane way to employ a glue trap.
Please join PAWS and other local animal groups in writing to your city and county council members insisting that these barbaric traps be banned from our communities. Other local businesses such as Ikea have effectively eliminated birds from their facilities with creative management practices, such as using recordings of birds of prey to deter smaller birds, and there is no reason other large facilities can not adopt the same best practices.
Important email contacts:
Seattle mayor Greg Nichols
Seattle City Council: ask that the Seattle Municipal Code be updated!
King County Executive Ron Sims
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon
Important points to make in your communication:
- Glue traps cause undue suffering and pain.
- Animals are entering buildings and businesses because they can. There are ways to exclude wildlife and rodents from public places through proper construction, responsible management of food products, and exclusion techniques such as screens, visual scare devices and repellents. Exclusion of animals needs to be the goal, not reactive killing.
- Nationwide, best practices for pest control organizations do not allow for the use of glue traps, they focus on humane management methods.
- Many local businesses, such as Ikea, have successfully used non-lethal control methods.
- As a resident of Seattle, King or Snohomish County, I request that this issue be addressed at the next council meeting and ask for public opinion to be heard. Please contact me with the date the hearing will be held.
Please keep us in the loop with any responses you receive by emailing them to zibbyw@paws.org. Together we will put an end to this cruel practice!
