Rupurt Gets a Second Chance
PAWS' matchmakers recently received a terrific update from Samantha Barth who welcomed Rupurt, a PAWS shelter dog, into her life earlier this year. Rupurt was at a shelter in Walla Walla, Washington for a few months, until he was transferred to PAWS to give him a fresh chance at finding a home. As a teenaged pup, Rupurt persistently barked in his kennel, but was well-mannered and eager to learn when outside. After a month stay at PAWS, the perfect person for him finally arrived. Samantha wrote:
"Rupurt is still not thrilled about being left at home in his big kennel, but he is learning and growing so well! Since he moved in, Rupurt has learned manners (don't jump up, no mouth, can't take food), obedience (sit, wait, come, leave it), and general household do's and don'ts (do potty outside, don't potty inside, do chew a bone, but don't chew the cords).
He has mastered play at the dog park, walking on a lead, and snuggling on the sofa. The vet said he is a healthy boy, and Rupurt proudly wears his dog collar with a license and his new dog tag.
All in all, Rupurt has proven to be a wonderful companion, a happy pet, and a loving new member of the family. I don't know how often you get to hear how the doggies you helped get adopted turn out in their new homes, and I thought you'd enjoy knowing that this one seems happy as can be!"
Samantha also informs PAWS that Rupurt is now learning the joys of hiking the great Northwest. Thank you Samantha, for giving a shelter dog the second chance he deserves.
Honor Earth Month this April
In honor of Earth Month, save some "green" when you adopt a pet. PAWS is offering $25 off the adoption fee for adult cats and adult dogs throughout April. Spring and Summer Volunteer Opportunities
With the longer days, comes the need to increase our volunteer ranks here at PAWS. If you are looking for something to do with your spare time this spring and summer, PAWS is looking for people who can provide TLC in their homes to at-risk kittens and puppies. We also need volunteers to hand-feed orphaned wild baby birds at PAWS Wildlife Center, and lots of enthusiastic animal-lovers to be PAWS' ambassadors at community fairs and festivals. Interested? Exclusively for Kids
Introducing two, one-of-a-kind, hands-on workshops at PAWS, launching in May, created exclusively for young people. The first workshop is all about cats and dogs, where kids can learn more about their behavior and how to train them in a positive way. Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit with one of PAWS' adoptable cats or dogs as well as a special shelter animal ambassador.
The second workshop is for the nature lover. Kids will discover how to appreciate, respect and help wildlife in their community. This workshop will be packed with interactive games, crafts, a nature trail walk on PAWS' campus, and an opportunity to handle wildlife artifacts (such as owl wings and a hawk talon).

The Final Swim
Every year since 2000, animal-lovers Paul Zimmerman and Bob Donovan have braved the cold waters of Puget Sound for Paddle for PAWS, swimming from Vashon Island to West Seattle to raise awareness of, and much-needed funds for PAWS. That's more than 35 miles for animals in need and a total of over $23,000 raised!
May 17, 2009 will mark the final swim for Paul and Bob. Join us as we celebrate all that they have accomplished. Learn how you can support their efforts.
