Outdoor enclosures for cats

For cats allowed to roam outdoors, danger lurks at every corner. Traffic, poisons, disease, cat fights--the list goes on and on. The greatest gift we can give our cats is the promise of a long, healthy, and happy life in the security of our homes.

One way to enrich the lives of indoor cats is to offer them safe experiences outside, either by walking them with a harness and leash, or by providing them a secure enclosure off the house or in the yard. With a bit of creativity, cat guardians can construct a low-cost sanctuary for their companions.

Outdoor pens range from the simple (see plans below) to the sublime. They can be furnished with old tree stumps, perches, tarps to provide shade and protection from the rain, even enclosed ladders for safe access to and from the house.

Another option is to install a window box that provides a protected perch for cats who enjoy a panoramic view of the great outdoors. Window boxes, pens and runs can be ordered from the listed sources.

Construction plans for a basic 20' x 20' cat yard

--4' x 6' high metal fence post pounded into the ground to 4'

--6' high wire fencing (available in green vinyl coating)

Attach fencing to posts. Bend top 2' of fence inward at least 45 degrees. Do not construct pen around trees higher than posts, and be sure to keep play structures away from the fencing. Materials cost approximately $50.

Commercially available enclosures

People without the time or tools to construct enclosures for their cats can order a variety of pre-made pens, runs and window boxes.

From Sears: and 8' x 4" x 4' galvanized wire exercise pen for approximately $85 (Cat. #60023)

From General Cage Corporation: a folding, portable, three-story pen available for $110 through mail order catalogues, or write manufacturer at 238 N 29th St, Elwood, IN, 46036.

From Anibode: custom-designed window boxes. Write 339 Pape Avenue, Toronoto, Ontario, Canada, M4M2W9
