Bird Nursery Caretaker

Duties: Bird Nursery Caretakers spend their shift hand-feeding nestling and juvenile songbirds, such as robins and chickadees. Other duties include:

  • Set up and clean animal enclosures
  • Prepare diets (includes live insects)
  • Dishes and general cleaning
  • Hand-feed nestling and juvenile songbirds
  • Monitor bird health and communicating issues to staff
  • Assisting with other wildlife care duties as needed

Dates Available: May 1-September 15 (end date is variable, dependent upon patient numbers); volunteers are encouraged to apply starting in January in order to begin volunteering in May.

Volunteers must sign up for a regular, weekly shift and attend these for the entirety of the season (May through August/September).

Shifts are available seven days a week at the following times:
8 a.m.-1 p.m.
1 p.m.-6 p.m.
6 p.m.-10 p.m.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Attendance at a New Volunteer Orientation, Wildlife Info Session, and Basic Skills Training (including an online training component). You must be available to attend an in-person training session on one of the following dates:
    • Thursday, May 2nd: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, May 4th: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • Tuesday, May 14th: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, May 18th: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
    • Please note: Spots are limited so we recommend having at least two training times that work for you as we cannot guarantee space. If you are unavailable for any of these training sessions, we instead invite you to learn about our other roles at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center!
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • A superior attention to detail.
  • Comfortable with quickly picking up new skills and working in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.
  • Capable of working under limited supervision, after fully trained.
  • Comfortable approaching staff with questions and asking for direction when needed.
  • Shows good judgment.
