Volunteering Opportunities at PAWS
Post-Surgery Clinic Assistant
Position Description: PAWS has one full-time and one part-time companion animal veterinarians on staff, as well as three veterinary assistants, and they spay or neuter every animal that leaves the shelter, resulting in an average of ten or more surgeries a day. Post Surgery Clinic Assistants help the veterinary staff with the transfer of animals back to the shelter after surgery, and sanitize the post operative area, cages and equipment after use. Volunteers assist the veterinary staff with other related projects that vary from week to week. Volunteers in this position are exposed to various cleaning agents. Animal contact is mostly with post-surgery animals in various stages of anesthesia. Volunteers must be able to work independently after trained, and use safe animal handling per PAWS protocols when working with the animals. Duties include but are not limited to: moving animals from the veterinary clinic to the shelter after surgery using safe animal handling protocols (both facilities are on the premises); transporting paperwork for each animal to shelter; helping to monitor anesthetic recovery; cleaning and organizing the veterinary clinic after transporting animals; cleaning, wrapping and sanitizing veterinary surgery packs; assisting with laundry; sweeping and mopping.
Dates Available: year round
Shifts: Monday through Friday, 4 pm–6:30 pm
No shifts available on Saturday and Sunday.
Time Commitment: Weekly 3 hour shift; 3 months minimum commitment
Location: PAWS Spay and Neuter Clinic, Companion Animal Services Shelter, Lynnwood
Training Required: All volunteers must attend a four volunteer orientation before starting their position. The orientation covers each of the volunteer positions at the PAWS Companion Animal Shelter in detail, and explains the overall objectives of PAWS as an organization. This orientation is held two times per month at the shelter in Lynnwood. PAWS trains all volunteers, no previous experience is necessary. Training sessions are 1-2 hours, set up at time of orientation. Additional training is offered, but not mandatory.
