Black-crowned Night-herons
July 1, 2020
Black-crowned Night-herons are rare in western Washington and thus, an uncommon patient for us at PAWS. However, they are the most widespread heron in the world and can be found in the wetlands of the Columbian Basin. As this species nest in colonies, it was especially destructive when a storm toppled a tree that housed many nests. Biologists from the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation collected 20 survivors on the ground and drove them to the PAWS Wildlife Center. They ranged in age from recently hatched to a week or so from leaving the nest. Some required medical attention including surgery, but all need care until they are old enough to fend for themselves in the wild.
