Vaux’s Swift
August 19, 2020
Vaux’s Swifts normally nest in hollow mature trees in forests. When mature trees are lacking, however, these swifts sometimes choose chimneys. That was the case for the 2 patients we currently have in care and 8 others we released earlier this month. The nests were damaged, and the young fell down the chimney. Though we had a lot of success re-nesting many swifts this year, the attempts were unsuccessful for these ones. The remaining two swifts will be fed every hour during the day until they are flying well. We will then release them at a communal roost spot so they can learn from the adults and be warm at night.
