Taiga Merlin

March 10, 2021

This male merlin collided with a window last week in Duvall. He is currently being treated for a retinal tear and nerve damage that prevents him from flying. Taiga Merlins are a subspecies that migrate as far south as South America. This young bird was likely on his return trip to Canada when he had his accident. Unfortunately, window collisions are common during migrations for many bird species. In fact, up to a billion birds die each year in the U.S. from this cause. We can help by making our windows look more obviously like barriers (install external screens, use decals, close drapes at night, etc.). Find more ideas from Audubon’s website.
