Yuma Myotis Bat
March 31, 2021
We currently are caring for a Yuma myotis that has White Nose Syndrome (WNS). WNS is caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans that grows on the bats while they are hibernating. It has led to the death of millions of bats in North America. The fungus causes the bats to arouse from hibernation more often than usual, which depletes their energy reserves needed to survive the winter. You can see the lesions caused by the fungus on his left-wing. Learn more about this disease from the White Nose Syndrome Response Team.
