Fall Migration 2021
September 15, 2021
Fall migration is happening now, and with it, the seasonal influx of birds hitting windows. We received multiple warblers last week that suffered collisions including a Townsend’s warbler and a yellow warbler. As the vast majority of migratory birds travel at night, reducing light pollution is particularly important to their safety. Tonight, millions of migratory birds will pass through our state and an estimated 6.4 thousand over Seattle. Please draw blinds at night during migration or at least during high alert times (check forecast here). Please also shield outdoor lights from emitting upward. Find more tips to reduce light pollution here. The PAWS Wildlife Center is here to help these injured birds. However, up to a billion birds die each year from window strikes and an estimated 54-76 percent of collisions are fatal. Therefore, the best remedy is prevention. Thanks for your help!
