Injured Silver-Haired Bat
January 12, 2022
Silver-haired bats are one of the most common bat patients we receive in late fall/winter. However, this bat case is unusual. The mandibles of an insect (possibly an ant) were found embedded into her thumb. The area around the bite was swollen, and her nail had fallen off. Our veterinary team was able to remove the mandibles, and the wound has since healed. However, her nail still hasn’t grown back so she is unable to grasp surfaces with that wing. We will continue to care for her until her thumbnail has returned to normal.
