Common Goldeneye
February 9, 2022
This common goldeneye arrived at the center with a fractured bill and some soft tissue wounds. As the bone was exposed at the tip of the bill, our veterinary team placed a protective cover at the site to allow for proper healing. Without this cover, the bone would die. Fortunately, recent reports indicate that he is eating well despite the changes to his bill!
This species can be difficult to maintain in a captive setting, so our rehabilitators closely monitor his body condition and feather health. Poor feather condition will affect a goldeneye’s waterproofing which affects its buoyancy and ability to stay warm. We hope we can maintain this delicate balance until his bill heals.
Special thanks to the members of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network that discovered, rescued, and transported this patient last week!
