Evening Grosbeak

April 13, 2022

A male evening grosbeak arrived 3 weeks ago from Snohomish. He had a fractured femur (leg) and ulna (wing). The case was somewhat unusual as the fractures were not recent, so the bird had been unable to fly for at least a week. Animals that present for care with older fractures can be particularly challenging as they typically don’t heal in the correct position. Fortunately, in this case, both fractures were well-aligned. No further medical intervention was required aside from pain management and cage rest to allow the bones to finish healing. He is eating well in one of our aviaries, and his flight continues to improve. Male evening grosbeaks have striking plumage to attract mates. Check out how males flash their bright plumage during their courtship “dances.”
