Along with other compulsive hoarding behaviors, it is linked in the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to obsessive-compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
