Wildlife Care Assistant

Duties: Wildlife Care Assistants assist with the care and feeding of all wildlife center patients except juvenile songbirds and staff-only animals, such as bears, seals, and bobcats.
Duties include:
- Cleaning and preparing cages
- Doing laundry and dishes
- Preparing diets for all wildlife patients
- Assisting staff with animal care
- Sweeping and mopping
- Building, painting, and special cleaning projects
- In the spring and summer duties also include hand-feeding young mammals
Experienced volunteers who meet set criteria are given the opportunity to learn advanced animal handling and medical skills, including gavage (tube) feeding, handling raptors (ie., owls, hawks), administering oral medications, and giving subcutaneous and intramuscular injections.
Qualifications: Volunteers must sign up for a regular, weekly shift and attend these for the entirety of the baby season (through 9/30), or for at least a six-month period.
Shifts are available seven days a week at the following times:
8 a.m.-1 p.m. (available year-round)
1 p.m.-6 p.m. (available year-round)
6 p.m.-10 p.m. (available 4/1 – 9/30)

Candidate Requirements:
- Attendance at a New Volunteer Orientation, Wildlife Info Session, and Basic Skills Training (including an online training component).
- Must be able to work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and interns.
- A superior attention to detail.
- Comfortable with quickly picking up new skills and working in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.
- Capable of working under limited supervision, after fully trained.
- Comfortable approaching staff with questions and asking for direction when needed.
- Shows good judgement.
- Ability to tolerate working in all weather conditions (position includes outdoor, highly physical work).
